Bias Binding

Bias binding is one of those little sewing essentials that can elevate a project from homemade to beautifully handmade. Bias binding is a strip of fabric cut on the bias — at a 45-degree angle to the weave of the fabric. This gives it just the right amount of stretch and flexibility, making it perfect for finishing curved edges, creating neat hems, or adding a decorative trim.

Types of Bias Binding:

  • Single Fold: A strip folded once along each edge towards the centre, giving you a clean edge on either side. Perfect for making narrow, tidy finishes.
  • Double Fold: The edges are folded inwards, then the strip is folded again down the middle, making a sturdy binding that encloses raw edges beautifully.
  • Stretch Bias: Made from jersey or other stretchy fabrics, this type hugs curves even better, ideal for necklines and armholes.
