An Alternative nose for Luna Lapin and her friends
Needle Felting a Nose
Questions on Luna and Wilhelmina’s nose have cropped up a few times on the Facebook Group, Luna Lapins Little World.
Iris Stock has kindly provided us with details of her alternative to the sewn nose, which is a needle felted version.
You will need; carded wool (sometimes also known as felting wool and wool tops), standard felting needle (gauge 36 if this is specified) you can use a wooden handle if you like too. This is helpful for control or if you have any hand problems to contend with. One is shown in the pictures.
Instructions
Start once you have stuffed the head. The padding helps prevent the needle breaking.
Take a piece of felt the size of a 5 pence piece. Lick the centre of your palms and roll the felt into a loose ball between your palms.
Decide where your nose will be on your animal and place the felt there. Use a light stabbing motion, straight up and down. Don’t slant the needle. Hold the needle like you would a pen.
Go around the edges of the nose first; teasing it into a triangle. Now go over the rest of the nose.
You can add the mouth with a needle and thread or with felt in a similar fashion as above.
With grateful thanks to Iris Stock for her instructions and photographs. Please do leave your comments and reviews and send share your pictures with us #Lunalapin
Thank you for your feedback.
Wilhelmina looks so pretty with her neat little nose. I was lucky enough to meet Wilhelmina and Iris in person at the Malvern show. Iris’s attention to detail is lovely to see🐭
Thank you Rachel it was lovely to meet you as well.
That looks super – I am about to create Wilhelmina Woodmouse and might give the felting a try! Thanks for sharing!
Have a bash Sue it’s really easy.
Thank you Iris for sharing this tip. I’ve not done any felting before and will definitely give it a try on my next Wilhelmina as I struggled with the first one.
