A Magpie Morning….

By 10th July 2011No Comments

Another weekend, another vintage fair? Oh, yes please!

Yesterday, Magpie Nanny P and I went along to The Vintage Home & Fashion Fair, in the pretty market town of Kirkby Lonsdale. Organised by Gaynor Brown, owner of Fanny’s Vintage Fairs and in association with The Old Bank Emporium in Ingleton, there were 20 stalls of vintage fashion, antiques, collectables and homewares.

An eclectic mix of everything vintage, it was impossible to walk away empty handed, and customers were charmed by a pianist playing on the velvet draped stage whilst they browsed. All the displays were carefully thought out and artistically managed. The hall was like a childhood dressing up box, with rails of clothing, accessories frothing out of boxes, and jewels glinting and sparkling on the table tops.

Amongst the clothing were the collectables, the hall was a collector’s paradise. Attending these sort of events and seeing such reasonable prices for unique items, it makes us realize how unplundered we are up North. In London or the surrounding regions the prices would be at least treble what was being charged today. Looking at these pieces, it brings into question why anyone would want to buy something that has been mass produced in its thousands, when, on offer here were pieces that have a history, and that are unique because of that.

What did we buy? A beautiful Bezique set with wonderful old cards, counters, etc, linen teatowels in their original packaging, an old sewing box, a pattern for some crochet slippers (watch out, CoolCrafters, at a workshop near you?), and the most amazing, glamorous earrings.

Looking through the photos again, I wish I had bought more, I am in love with the design of the old radios, which would be perfect in the summerhouse. The babycham glasses would have been a great excuse for a cocktail party, and the yellow bikini, well, just to have it. The good news is that Fanny’s Vintage Fairs is doing it all over again on Saturday, 13th August 2011th at the same venue and has a future event at The Midland Hotel, Morecambe on Sunday, 11th September 2011.

The list of exhibitors isn’t complete, but I have listed those that I can.
